Exciting that today was another down day on the scale. It makes it look like I'm actually making progress and yesterday wasn't just a glitch or one off. I'm not sure if that trend will continue, but it is exciting to “beat” the lowest weight of last year so early in this year.
Started out the morning cleaning out the oven. I do have to say that worked out a lot easier than I was expecting to. It was kind of hard as the oven door doesn't come off like in a lot of ovens referenced online in the “how to” videos, or at least I couldn't figure out how to take it off and the positioning of the shelving unit in the corner across the oven made it hard to reach the back left corner of the interior. But it does seem like I got it all cleaned out. Mostly anyway. There's a lot of burnt on gunk on the door window and the front of the floor of the oven. I'll see if I get around to trying to get that stuff cleaned off on my next day off. Roommate did thank me for cleaning up the oven and seemed to be in a lot better mood today.
As I was getting breakfast ready I noticed that all of the bags of lunch that I had moved from the freezer to the fridge were still frozen. I guess I should be glad that the fridge is still working. But annoying that the lunch is still frozen and so is the roast that I was going to put in the slow cooker before work. I don't know if you could put a frozen roast in the slow cooker for eight hours, but I think I'll just hold off on trying it.
When I got to work I was letting the lady at Self Checkout out for her lunch. She said her hours were cut this week and she needed to duck out early because she had a doctor's appointment in the afternoon so she was only going to take half an hour lunch. I told her that I wouldn't argue against halving my time at Self Checkout. But I guess somebody had heard that thought as every single person in that next half an hour that came through was an absolute idiot. I had people complaining about how much they hated Self Checkout while the regular register was open and the cashier was just chatting with the carryout. A guy was upset as he didn't like the brand of the item on his coupon so he was upset that the coupon didn't work for the item that he did buy because he had bought the item, just a different brand of that item. One lady was upset that the bananas had to be on the scanner scale to weigh them. As another lady was upset that she was trying to ring up her apples one by one.
After running Self Checkout for half an hour I was supposed to be a carryout, but it was so busy I had to jump on a register for most of the first half of the day. A strange moment happened as the Cashier on Register 7 had an issue with the drawer closing so he gave a bit of a hard slam to close the drawer. And for some reason when he slammed the drawer close the register just shutdown and started rebooting itself. Strange, but not catastrophic, he just had to move to Register 8. We were both glad that it didn't decide to shut itself down in the middle of an order where we would have re-scanned half or most of an order in progress. And, not exaggerating, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes for the register to come back on. The only thing to do is to move to another register. The person next in line seemed to understand that the register had broke and we're just going to the next register over. The guy in line behind them did NOT understand and he was rather upset that he had to go to another register! “Why move registers when I was standing in line for this register!” Well, this register is broken, we're going to use a register that isn't broken. He just shouted, “Well, I guess I'll just shop somewhere else where they appreciate their customers time!” I don't understand what that meant. And that happens every time a register breaks (not something that happens often but it always makes somebody have the same reaction) A person in line will always throw a tantrum. It's literally just going to the register next to the broken register, but that is always just completely unacceptable. I never understand why people get upset that they can't use a broken register. They'd still be next in line. But people just figure it's better to storm off in anger.
The lady who let me out for lunch was at self checkout and told me that I had to explain the guy that let her out that he couldn't take as many smoke breaks. Which was fair, dude is asking for a smoke break every hour and a half. I tried to quickly remind him of our break policies, but I was also supposed to be going to lunch. The short of it is that we're only supposed to get one 15 minute break for every 4 hours that we work. If you work 4 hours before lunch and come back for a 3 and a half more hours you could (in theory but not guaranteed) get a 15 minute break in the first half, but not the second half. But of course he's cranky because he can't get a smoke break whenever he wanted to. When I got back from lunch it was busy for most of the evening. He said that he wanted to go ahead and take his break, but 1. He asked that just as another swarm came up, and 2. It was 6:35 and he went to his lunch at 7. I told him he could wait for his lunch to go smoke. I'm not going to give you a 15-20 minute break 25 minutes before your lunch. You can wait.
What was kind of concerning, and something that I might need to bring up with Store Management, was the lady who let Smokey out for his lunch asked me why I won't be the "main" Supervisor anymore. That was seriously news to me. She told me that the Noisy Lady who usually works Self Checkout 7am to 4 is going to start working the 11am to 8pm shift that I was used to be working. She's going to start working 11-3 Self Checkout and then 4-8 Supervisor. The lady who broke the news to me asked me what I was going to be doing. I had no idea that this change had happened. I noticed that I'm the Closing Cashier for a couple of nights next week and I've been scheduled to work various locations, not just Supervisor lately. I didn't know that I was no longer going to be the "Main" supervisor. My Job Title didn't change, it still says "Front End Lead Clerk" so I'm not sure what's going on. I would think that if I were to be demoted or was going to be disciplined they would have said something. But there is still the paranoid thought.
