I was awoken at about 5:45 in the morning by howling and screeching and the sound of Roommate plunging the toilet again. We had the same plunger for the 15 years (?) that we've lived here, but now we're on our third one this year. I don't know what he's doing in there. I personally have had no problems ever flushing, but it seems like every other time he's in there he's going at it again.
With the combination of interrupted sleep due to Roommate screeching and the fact that I had to work 10am to 7pm today I didn't wake up early enough time to have coffee. I did have time to scarf down bacon and eggs and a can of Sugar Free Monster. It was quite distracting to not have the pot of coffee. I wasn't really tired or dragging. But the idea of the morning ritual being interrupted was really distracting. When I left for work I checked multiple times to make sure, but when I left it was so close to the time I cooked breakfast that the burner was still hot. I really don't like leaving the house when the stove is still warm. It just kind of makes me nervous that there's a hot spot in the kitchen that's being left unattended.
Lately the produce department and the deli department have been setting up a grilling collaboration. The Deli warms up ribs on the grill outside, and the produce guy flame roasts Hatch Peppers. The Produce guy offered me a sample of the pepper and as I hadn't ever had a Hatch Pepper before I accepted the offer. I was kind of thrown off when he handed me a whole pepper to try. I didn't realize that I had to peel the pepper before eating it so I was picking the peel out of my teeth for a while after eating. At first impression it kind of reminded me of the sweetness of a bell pepper, but then the spiciness kicked in. It wasn't overwhelming, but it did clear my sinuses for a while.
I didn't have any of the Bell Pepper Soup for lunch today as during my lunch break I ran over to the big store on 30th street to their bank branch to have more checks printed off as I'm down to my last check. I'm hoping that the checks that I had printed off today will last for the couple of weeks until I have all of the bills paid off and will be able to order a new set of checks. The lady at the bank branch said that there wasn't a limit on how many filler checks that I could have printed off, but they're a dollar per page and it is just a hassle to go to the bank every couple of weeks to have them print off more checks.
I kind of feel sorry for the sister store over on 4th street. This conversation happened yesterday, but I had forgotten to write it down. Apparently the school year had started and none of their school age cashiers had updated their availability. Also one of their customer service people was in a car crash so they're out for medical reasons. And now they're asking other stores to fill in for their cashiers who can't work because they're all going back to school or in the hospital. It took a bit of asking to find out what was going on as I had walked by while one of the Assistant Managers was talking with the backup customer service manager while they were going back and forth on suggestions on who we could lend to the other store. I asked what was going on because it sounded like they were trying to cover hours and the manager just said, “Yeah, you could, but they're not going to pay overtime just for you to work.” I'm okay with overtime, just say what's going on. We both got called away to other reasons, but when I asked the backup customer service manger what was going on she filled me in. And I'm willing to bet that there wasn't much we could do as I'm pretty sure that we're already running a skeleton crew over at our store. I can't imagine that it'd be much better at any other store.
What drove that point home today was a kid was sent home, fired because of attendance points, another kid is on three day suspension for no showing for a couple of his shifts, and another lady who was supposed to be on a one day suspension because of attendance points posted on Facebook a rant about how she's walking away from her job because of the "BS" I'm not friends with her on Facebook (I don't have any current coworkers on Facebook) but other coworkers are and asked me what was going on.
I'm scoffing at her indignancy because apparently she had just shown up for work on Sunday. She was supposed to work Noon to 5pm. But she didn't look at her schedule so she had assumed that she was supposed to work at 7am. So she had just shown up at 7 in the morning ready for work. And was apparently sent home because she was five hours early for work. She called back at 10:30 and said that she wasn't going to come in. Because she wanted to work at 7 am and she didn't want to work at Noon. So if she wasn't going to work when she wanted to work, she just wouldn't work. Well, that doesn't work. And apparently neither does she anymore. And it really sucks to lose those two people because both of those people where people who could check, carryout, run self checkout, and supervise. Now we're down two people that were in four different places each.
When I got home Roommate had a pound of ground beef that he had bought out to thaw with two boxes of Instant Mac and Cheese. He said that he would have cooked it himself, but he was feeling sick. That does reset the Keto Kount, but at least he supplied the dinner tonight.
