I just kind of sat here at the computer counting down the time until I had to go to work. I worked Noon to Nine closing the Customer Service Desk instead of the normal 11a-8pm Supervisor shift that I usually do. I drank an entire pot of coffee, but I'm just sitting here zoned out. I had thought a couple of times that I need to get a plan together for what I'm going to cook on Tuesday for the weekly lunch. But then I zone back out. First half of the day went really smoothly. Not sure if I should write this down. This is being logged at lunch. I worked a 3:5 split so I went to lunch at 3pm and will have to work 4 to 9. The challenge of the first half of today was that I wasn't supervisor I was s...

Sober Month 6 (Day 189)

I know that “Happiness is not a number on a scale” but being up almost 12 pounds (~5 kg) over the month kinda hurts the morale. I've been feeling really bleah over the month. I'm not sure if that's because I've been off of the diet for too long. There is a fascinating link between Body/Mind/Spirit (emotion) health. Heck maybe looking at the weight tracking up everyday is hurting the mood. I haven't been making the daily blog, but I have been keeping track of the weight. But I often remind myself that each day is just a data point on the graph.

I spent most of the week staying at Mom's house while she went to Yellowstone National Park. When she got home on Thursday I cooked up a batch of Fathead Lasagna and had split it up into four servings. I had those in the fridge and had those for lunch yesterday and today. I have two more servings for tomorrow and overmorrow (little disappointed that spellcheck didn't recognize the proper word for the day after tomorrow). Conveniently that would leave enough lunches until Tuesday when I plan on doing grocery shopping. I'm planning on cooking a single low carb casserole or soup to have for lunches for the week and just have those waiting in the fridge for me. I was loading up the freezer with various recipes for lunches, but that was overfilling the freezer causing issues with the fridge.

Man that first half of the day stretched on for forever. It wasn't a bad day. It was actually a pretty nice day. There were moments when it got quite busy. It is the last weekend of the month, the weekend before a major holiday. It was pretty active when I got to work at 11, but it had calmed down considerably after noon. I'm writing this part at lunch (4p-5p) but I'm expecting it to pick up later in the evening. Somebody asked me why I thought it would be really busy when the sun starts going down. I just said, “experience”

It was a pretty active day for the second half as well. Active but smooth. I did have an exciting moment when I stopped someone from stealing over $300 worth of stuff. The guy closing Self Checkout asked for a smoke break. Technically he didn't work long enough for a break, but he'd only be outside for a couple of minutes. As he was outside a lady on one of the registers. She had a rather large order. Technically there isn't a limit to how many items you can go through the self checkout with, but the bigger the order the more likely that there will be issues with the order. They just aren't designed for your monthly/weekly shopping trip. I had noticed that there were several cases of beer in her cart so I was standing by waiting for her to scan her alcohol waiting to clear her ID. She did seem to be old enough to clear it without checking it. But she had scanned a bottle of Lighter fluid earlier this year they had made it so you had to be 18 to buy lighter fluid. So when she scanned the lighter fluid the register asked to clear her ID. She had started her order before the guy left to go smoke so that told me that she hadn't scanned the beer yet because if you have an item on the order that you have to be 21 to buy it won't ask again for something that you have to be 18 to buy. But the lady freaked out because she didn't have her ID with her. I tried to tell her that I'd bypass the ID but she demanded that I just take the lighter fluid off. Well, OK, but if you have declared that you're too young to buy the lighter fluid, you're too young to buy the beer. So I stood by to refuse sale for the beer. But as she seemed to notice that I was watching her she started freaking out. She started throwing items from her cart into the bagging area and from the bagging area back into her cart. These seemed to be items that were already scanned. So there wasn't anything that I could do, but her actions drew attention. She pushed the “Pay Now” button, but as she hadn't scanned a shoppers card the register asked for a card to be scanned or a phone number to get the discounts for the order. I asked her if the beer was on a separate order because it was obvious that they weren't on the current order. She yelled that they were on separate orders, COMPLETELY SEPARATE ORDERS! And then ran towards the door with the register still waiting for the shoppers card. I chased after her yelling at her to stop. I was able to catch a hold of the cart before she got it out of the door. She yelled that I wasn't allowed to stop her and she was going to call the police because I had kept her from stealing the cartload of groceries. I encouraged her to. I would imagine that would make for a fascinating conversation with law enforcement. "Help, Police. The grocery store didn't let me steal several hundred dollars worth of 'food'!" I would like to see the look on the face of the emergency dispatcher during that call.

After the event I was kind of hopped up on adrenaline. But I started getting a bit nervous. I'm already on management's short nerve because of complaints of me being, "rude" and now I just chased after a shoplifter. I am Front End Supervisor and I was running the Self Checkout at the time. And what is the Self Checkout Attendant doing there if they're not supposed to be stopping people from stealing? (Well, other than helping people with running the registers) But I'm not Loss Prevention. Confronting thieves isn't what I'm supposed to be doing. And confrontations can cause issues. Heck there have been multiple people who have been fired for getting into fights with thieves. I didn't physically interact with the lady I just grabbed the cart. I don't get paid enough to wrassle. If she had gotten out of the store I wouldn't have pursued her. I'm going to work on a statement just in case management asks for one.

After the rush of catching the thief and the paranoid thought of being punished for doing so (I'm sure it'll be fine) I really wanted a beer. So I picked up a case of Nonalcoholic beer of some Michelob Ultra Zero (not sponsored) I was good on the diet for the rest of the day, but I don't think that these beers are very Keto friendly. Nonalcoholic, so I'm good on that end though.
